Kombucha Soap

Kombucha Soap

If you are interested in living healthy, you have certainly already heard about kombucha tea. Kombucha is a fermented tea which can be easily brewed at home and which has a lot of health benefits, boosting your immune system and energy levels.
Kombucha contains a slippery, living mat of stuff known as a “mother” or SCOBY, a culture of bacteria and yeast, that produces various compounds including alcohol and acetic acid, the primary flavor of vinegar. Plain kombucha has an acidic, vinegar-like flavor compared to the original sweet tea flavor. But the strength of the tea flavor can be adjusted with the amount of tea bags brewed per volume of water. What I like about this tea, is that you can make so many variants. By adding some fruits or spices you can adjust it to your preferred taste.
Kombucha Soap

I have been brewing my kombucha since september. Thursday is the collecting day and even it takes a little bit of time to make it, I do enjoy these moments. While my husband would drink it because he knows that it’s healthy, my little daughter likes it and she asks for it everyday. We use to add it to our morning shakes or to drink mixed with some sweet sweet fruits. Kombucha tea has become part of our daily life.

This soap is inspired by the soap which I made last year of fermented wheat bran and by this kvas soap. Its delicacy, its foam made me want again to try another fermented product in soap. Those who already tried a soap with fermented wheat bran or kombucha know exactly what I mean.

Soap made of: coconut oil, olive oil, shea butter, cacao butter, sunflower oil, kombucha tea, litsea cubeba essential oil, citronella essential oil.

I used to have one scoby, but it didn’t survive my negligence. I tried to drink it,wasn’t very happy with the taste and gave it up. I really admire you for your devotion to eat healthy and to spice up acquiring tastes.

Maybe you didn’t put enough sugar, Maja..it happened to me too…i prefer to put enough sugar(sugar is the ‘base of resistance’ of kombucha) and dissolve it with some water in case it’s too sweet.

What a brilliant idea Nat! I love how you take things from everyday life and use them in your soaps. I’d love to try kombucha, but haven’t gotten around to acquiring a scoby.

  6. Funny! I was thinking about trying it just today! You replaced the water of your lye solution by konbucha? did you freeze it? How did you get such a white soap with olive oil? Olive oil makes soaps off-white to yellow in my experience, alas…

No, I didn’t freeze it, just used it as water.
I didn’t put much of olive oil.

Just like Maja, a really admire your healthy way of life. I first heard about kombucha 5-6 years ago but never got to try it. At that time I was healthy living (not so much now) and I had my kefir. I miss those days… 🙂

I was looking for a kombucha soap recipe, and found this page….do you have the recipe somewhere on your blog? Maybe I missed it? I’ve been brewing kombucha for about six months now, and was looking for new ways to use it. I’d love to make some soap. I’ve already made a sourdough starter, so I’d like to try soap!

    1. Natalia says:

Hi Judy, I don’t have a special recipe for kombucha soaps…all you have to do is to replace the water by kombucha( 100% or less dependind on your preferences) and mix it slowly(i would compare it to making milk soap). If you have some questions, don’t hesitate to come back.

      1. Judy H says:

Thank you! I’ll give it a go! 🙂
